Is the first bat known to feed on alpine moths
Wednesday, 25 April 2012
Continue Reading | No CommentsThe alpine or mountain long-eared bat (Plecotus macrobullaris) is one of the most amazing and unknown bats in Europe. It was described in 2002 and very little information is known about it nowadays. It is the main character of my PhD which aims to deepen the knowledge of this species, and part of its unknown ecology has been unveiled recently. We have just published in the journal PLoSOne the article about the diet of the species we studied by molecular means using DNA barcodes. We identified 29 moth species consumed by the mountain long-eared bat, and the species level identification allowed us to infere where this species captured its prey: in alpine and subalpine meadows.

Sunday, 01 April 2012
Continue Reading | 2 CommentsThere is a hiking route in the northern part of Scandinavia which is worth to visit by anyone who enjoy nature, loneliness and peace. From Abisko to Hemavan extends a 440-km long path that crosses some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. It is called Kungsleden, translated to English as The King's Trail, and it was created by Svenska Turistföreningen (STF) at the end of the 19th century, in order to to bring the world one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Nowadays is one of the most famous hiking routes in northern Europe and has well-earned fame. My girlfriend and I had the luck to taste a small fragment of this wonder in summer 2011: we walked northwards from Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta Fjällstation for 4 days, and this is the little photographic chronic about our journey.
